"Goodnight, my princess. Sleep safe."
For those of you who have never read the writings of Mike Gallagher, you're missing out. I'd highly encourage you to seek him out on Townhall.com, one of my favorite conservative websites. Mike is one of my favorite writers.
About a year ago, Mike shared with his audience that his beloved wife was suffering from terminal cancer, and that she had at most a year to live. I shudder to think of what it must be like to hear news like that about the love of ones life. I have a dear friend who has suffered from bone cancer four times, and each time the news was like a punch in the stomach, so I can only imagine how it felt when Mike was dealt one of life's cruelest blows.
Mike's openness touched me, and today he shared with his audience that Denise passed away a few weeks ago. He wrote about the last year that he was blessed to share with Denise, and how knowing she would pass soon had brought them closer together and gave him, at least, an even deeper appreciation for life and for their partnership, and how it reminded him every day what a blessing it is to share your life with someone special. His words moved me to tears.
Life has moments of exhilaration and absolute earth-shattering sadness. I recently felt the earth move beneath my feet when I separated from someone I truly loved more than I had ever imagined it possible to love another. These things happen in life, and I find they happen when you least expect them. They serve as a reminder of how precious the time is with the ones that we love, that we should always treat each day as the gift that it is, and to appreciate the forest from the trees. It's beyond unfortunate that we need reminders like this to do something that seems as if it should be so basic. But alas, life moves on, sometimes more slowly than you hope for, and regardless of whether or not you know it's "for the best" it doesn't make it hurt any less. Mike, at the very least, was blessed with the gift of time to appreciate and value his precious Denise during their final months together. It's a blessing I suspect he will cherish even more as life goes on, and sooner or later the moments of exhilaration will come easier and the sun will shine a little bit brighter.
I don't imagine Mike would ever read this blog, but if by chance he does, I'd like to say to him: Mike, thank you for sharing your story with us, and for opening your heart to us. Even though Denise is no longer with you in body, she is and will forever be by your side in spirit. When you turn off the light at night, she'll still hear you when you say "Goodnight, my princess. Sleep safe." For love, that one true love, will always remain a part of you. Even after you've parted.
G-d bless you, Mike.
