A Mistake in Pennsylvania and Well-Wishes for Rick Santorum

The good people of the great Keystone State of Pennsylvania have made a mistake for which they and their country will pay a price for at least the next six years. In choosing to elect Bob Casey, Jr., a political hack and a man who ran on his fathers' good name, Pennsylvanian's turned out of office a man of great principle, a true leader in the United States Senate whose voice will be missed not just by Republicans and conservatives (I separate these two on purpose) but also by rational members of the Democrat Party who know a man of class and honor when they see one. Rick Santorum's defeat will leave a tremendous void in the Senate, and not just because of his principled stands on behalf of AIDS victims in Africa, his unwavering support of human life in every form and his belief (proven beyond ALL reasonable doubt) that lower taxes spur the economy and bring in higher revenues for government. No, we will miss Rick's voice in the Senate because his rings louder and truer on the gravest danger our nation has ever faced: the war against radical Islam.

Rick Santorum's Gathering Storm speeches, the title a nod to the great Winston Churchill, struck a chord that more people need to listen to. We are facing an enemy that wants to destroy us and doesn't care how or why. Rick Santorum understands that WMD in the hands of terrorists puts in jeopardy not just our lives, but the lives of our posterity, our children and grandchildren. It jeopardizes the very freedom we all take for granted. The fate of Western civilization is at stake, and it was clear to anyone who watched the debates between Santorum and lightweight Bob Casey, Jr. that Casey just didn't get it. He just doesn't understand what we're up against. And if he does, he sure took great pains to pretend like he didn't. Our nation is very much less secure today without Rick Santorum casting votes in the United States Senate.

I'm sure Rick Santorum isn't reading the musings of this humble author. But if he were, I'd want him to know how grateful I am for his principled leadership on issues across the board. His work to fight AIDS in Africa and his stands for the most vulnerable among us are inspiring fights to which we should all be willing to sacrifice and take part. I'd want Rick to know that despite his defeat in Pennsylvania he is a man of honor, a true leader who people of every political stripe can and do look up to. I'd want him to know that I hope he will seriously consider running for the presidency of the United States in 2008. The stakes are too high for us to consider electing someone who doesn't see clearly and understand the fight we're in.

Rick, America is grateful for your service to the nation. The Senate is a lesser place without you, and everyone, not just Pennsylvania, is worse off today than we were before your reelection campaign fell short. But I know that you will not sit idly by while the storm gathers. Rick, America needs you now more than ever.

I firmly believe that Santorum's loss, while tragic in the short term, will prove to be beneficial to America in the long run. Santorum is a good and decent man with courage and integrity, and he is one of the shining stars of modern, principled conservatism. As the liberal Democrat leadership in Congress takes us closer to disaster, America will clamor for his kind of Reaganesque/Churchillian leadership. The best is yet to come from Rick Santorum!
